About the Archive
Institutional Overview and Digital Archives
The Cory Library for Humanities Research serves as a central repository for documentary resources relating to the histories of the Eastern Cape and the wider Southern African region. Its digital collections are intended to support scholarly engagement by providing access to manuscripts, photographic materials, and archival records that contribute to an understanding of the region’s social, political, and cultural development.
Archival Integrity and Historical Context
Materials made available through this repository are presented as reproductions of the historical record. To retain the evidentiary value and original context of the sources, the Cory Library adheres to a principle of minimal intervention. Titles, descriptions, and terminology have therefore not been altered, redacted, sanitised or modernised. This approach reflects an understanding that careful preservation of original language and context is essential to critical scholarship and the responsible interpretation of historical narratives.
Diversification of the Historical Record
The Cory Library acknowledges that archival collections are necessarily shaped by the circumstances of their creation. In response, the Library is engaged in an ongoing effort to expand the scope of its holdings, ensuring they better reflect the diverse experiences and perspectives of the region. Through continued archival development and collaboration, the Library seeks to contribute to a more inclusive and nuanced historical record.
Content Advisory
Users should be aware that archival materials often reflect the social values and assumptions of the periods in which they were produced. As a result, some collections may contain language, imagery, or representations that are considered offensive or distressing by contemporary standards. Researchers are encouraged to approach these materials with appropriate discretion and contextual awareness.
Intellectual Property and Access Protocols
The Cory Library preserves and provides access to its collections, supporting research, teaching, and learning. While many materials may be in the public domain, certain items remain subject to copyright and related intellectual property restrictions. Use of such materials beyond private research or educational purposes may require permission from the relevant rights holders.
Takedown and Ethical Review Policy
The Library endeavours to act in accordance with applicable legal and ethical frameworks governing cultural heritage and intellectual property. Individuals or communities who believe that material should be reviewed or removed on legal or ethical grounds are invited to consult the Library’s Take-Down Policy [Link], which outlines the procedures for submitting and assessing such requests.
Community Engagement and Acquisitions
The Cory Library values engagement with researchers, communities, and members of the public in the ongoing development of its collections. Feedback on existing holdings, as well as enquiries regarding the donation of physical or digital materials, is welcome. All proposed acquisitions are considered in line with the University’s Collection Development and Management Policy and Guidelines.
