Abstract

Ibali lamaHlubi (The History of the Hlubi People), written in isiXhosa by H. M. Ndawo and first published by Lovedale Press in 1945, is an early historical account of the amaHlubi people. The work documents the origins, lineage, and migration of the Hlubi nation, drawing extensively on oral traditions, including legends, praise poetry, songs, and proverbs, to reconstruct the history of a largely non-literate society. It traces the genealogy of Hlubi kings, patterns of settlement and displacement, and the geographical spread of the amaHlubi across parts of present-day South Africa and neighbouring regions. The text also examines cultural identity and key historical conflicts, including interactions with the Zulu Kingdom and encounters with colonial authorities in the nineteenth century.
