The Frontier Collections
Description
The Frontier Collections are a curated collection of archival materials that document the turbulent and formative era of the Eastern Cape frontier. Spanning the late 18th to the early 20th century, these collections provide a multi-perspective view of the Frontier Wars (Xhosa Wars), the establishment of colonial administration, and the subsequent growth of settler infrastructure.

The collection is particularly noted for its focus on the "Frontier Country"—the region surrounding Makhanda (Grahamstown)—detailing the interplay between British settlers, Boer trekkers, and the Xhosa kingdoms.

  • Southwell cemetery
    Eastern Cape, Albany district, Southwell, St James Anglican Church, cemetery. This cemetery lies just off the dirt road between Port Alfred and Grahamstown, adjacent to the Southwell school and near the shop, a few hundred metres from the entrance to the Sports Club. The church was built in 1870.

  • Stewart Monument in course of construction
    Rev. James Stewart was principal of Lovedale from 1870 until his death in 1905, and is buried on Sandile’s Kop above Fort Hare University. The 80 foot tower is a memorial to him.
