The Jack (Cuthbert John) Skead Collection comprises a substantial body of photographic material that documents the natural environments, vegetation types, and ecological habitats of the Eastern Cape and the wider southern African region. The photographs—taken over several decades—capture landscapes, plant communities, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and other habitat formations that were central to Skead’s extensive research interests. Many images also document environmental change, land use patterns, and field sites associated with his ornithological and botanical studies.
The collection provides a valuable visual record for researchers working in the fields of environmental history, ecology, biogeography, conservation, and Eastern Cape natural heritage. This was a relict patch of fynbostype veld which once covered the Summerstrand area prior to its development for housing. This patch will disappear in the not-too-distant future taking an interresting veld type with it. -

Bulbine frutescens en mass on what might have been an old fallow land. Probably 3 or 4 hectares. -
Yellow-flowering Cineraria lobata. En mass as pioneer after dense bushveld cleared for housing estate. Note line of original bush cover in background. Mesembryanthemum cover had also come in. -
Low dunes covered with Gazania ringens -
Gladiolus guenzii in flower and seed in pure sand of the dunes. This species is especially plentiful in this small area. -
Exceptionally fine growth of a single Aizoon rigidum growing in pure sand at a very dry time on ground recently cleared dense bush for the development of a new housing site. -
Saltmarsh conditions and the bushy nature of the low dunes. The beach and the sea immediately behind the dunes in the picture. -
