The Jack (Cuthbert John) Skead Collection comprises a substantial body of photographic material that documents the natural environments, vegetation types, and ecological habitats of the Eastern Cape and the wider southern African region. The photographs—taken over several decades—capture landscapes, plant communities, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and other habitat formations that were central to Skead’s extensive research interests. Many images also document environmental change, land use patterns, and field sites associated with his ornithological and botanical studies.
The collection provides a valuable visual record for researchers working in the fields of environmental history, ecology, biogeography, conservation, and Eastern Cape natural heritage. Dense Spekboom veld Portulacaria afra. The whole valley was in blossom after good winter rains. -

Example of survival under severe and unnatural circumstances. A Coral Aloe, Aloe striata perilously perched on the vertical slope of a donga. A few others of its kind were growing nearby in more favourable situations. -
Spread of stinkbos, Oedera genistoides (formally Relhania) at roadside and into adjoining grassveld. Similar stretches occurred elsewhere in the area.,Note: The "Gamtra" river as per the title could not be sourced. It might be a misspelling of the iCamtarha River, which is a tributary of the Boesmans River - Note added by W van der Walt on 19 September 2017. -

A lone Spekboom standing in what must have been good Valley Bush Thicket in its heyday. Note the contrast of good bushiness in the far background. Note too, how the Spekboom has been eaten clean to the limits of a goats reach. -
Congo's Kraal farm (kwaChungwa), the Great Place of Gqunukhwebe chief Chungwa in late 18th century lies in the bushveld towards the left of the picture. The open foreground has been cleared of its dense bush in recent years. View overlooking country between Nanaga and the coast, Alexandria district, with bushy dune-hills in the distance. -

Plaque states:" "Grave of Nonquase (sic)the Xosa (sic) prophettess who lived in the vicinity after the Cattle Killing Episode of 1858 until her death in 1890. Erected by CL Deacon, TB Bowker and I Mitford-Barberton, 1963". -

With replica of cross planted there in 1488 by Bartholomeu Dias. The scrub vegetation is dense, short and windblown, well-adapted to severe conditions there. Vegetation on the False Island at Kwaaihoek, Alexandria, 5 km west of Boesmans Mouth along the beach. -

Aproximate site of former drinking place of rhinos, eland etc. in the 1770's and before. Now dried, site was somewhere near the base of the hill near the road along which the car is travelling off the N2 from PE to Cradock and the north. -
