The Jack (Cuthbert John) Skead Collection comprises a substantial body of photographic material that documents the natural environments, vegetation types, and ecological habitats of the Eastern Cape and the wider southern African region. The photographs—taken over several decades—capture landscapes, plant communities, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and other habitat formations that were central to Skead’s extensive research interests. Many images also document environmental change, land use patterns, and field sites associated with his ornithological and botanical studies.
The collection provides a valuable visual record for researchers working in the fields of environmental history, ecology, biogeography, conservation, and Eastern Cape natural heritage. The photographs complement Skead’s published and unpublished work held at Cory Library, including field notes, correspondence, and research manuscripts. - Language

Colourful mosaic of red Indigofera, yellow Cotula, and white Helichrysum, Good spring after good winter rains. -
Ambient temp. 23'C with cool breeze off the sea. Yet strong scent of Agothosma apiculata in the air and underfoot when trodden on. Much of the low herbage in front of the camera contained this aromatic plant. The famous Schoenies Smell. Schoenmakerskop resort in the background. -
The buttress in right rocky foreground with its hill and slope to the right out of the picture was strongly scented today by Agathosma apiculata's Schoennies smell in the air. 23'C with cool breeze off the sea. Low tide. S'kop resort in trees in background. -
Single bush of Zygophyllum morgsana on lip of steep scarp down to sea level. -

Schoenmakerskop houses with their characteristic Araucaria monkey-puzzle trees backed by the two kops. The Aloe arborescens plants in the bushiness of the foreground cliff-shelf have been introduced. -

The dark green patches with small white scattered flowers are clumps of Agothosma apiculata, the buchu with gives rise to the Schoennies Smell.
