- Description
-
The Jack (Cuthbert John) Skead Collection comprises a substantial body of photographic material that documents the natural environments, vegetation types, and ecological habitats of the Eastern Cape and the wider southern African region. The photographs—taken over several decades—capture landscapes, plant communities, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and other habitat formations that were central to Skead’s extensive research interests. Many images also document environmental change, land use patterns, and field sites associated with his ornithological and botanical studies.
The collection provides a valuable visual record for researchers working in the fields of environmental history, ecology, biogeography, conservation, and Eastern Cape natural heritage. The photographs complement Skead’s published and unpublished work held at Cory Library, including field notes, correspondence, and research manuscripts. - Language

Massed flowering of Cotyledon orbiculata on veld likely to be destroyed by factory development. In the 1993 flowering year most of the veld between Redhouse and Perseverence was covered in such massed Cotyledon - a wonderful sight. The 1994 season was good but not up to the 1993 year. -
Good growth of flowering Aspalanthus sublingens shrubs. Probably soon to go the way of all the other ground here. -
Lone very large and old Spekboom tree, Portulacaria afra, a relic of many destroyed during the building of the factories here. Badly scared by vandals. Not likely to survive given further factory development in the area. -
Cotyledon orbiculata in full flower but soon to be removed under new factory extension. Such density occuring from here to Perseverence & on to Despatch probably all doomed by future development. -
Harveya purpurea flowering well under very dry conditions. Another plant was nearby. Soon to be covered by factory growth. Note builder's hut in mid-picture. -
At least 9 plants of Ammocharis coranica in hard ground. Others nearby out of this photo. This helps record the status of the species in an area rapidly being covered by factory buildings. -
At least 7 plants of Ammocharis coranica in hard dry ground. This plot on which they were growing is wedged between two developed site (e.g. the one in the background) and is likely to be built upon to the detriment of all Ammocharis plants, many others of which grow here. -
Good showing of Chrysocoma probably tenuifolia despite severe drought prevailing. Other patches nearby. Grootwinterhoek Mts. in background. -
Incredible density of Cotyledon orbiculata. Those outside the fence and on the grassy side are much less dense. Photo taken through diamond-mesh netted fence. -
Cotyledon orbiculata (a) on grassy pavement to left of wire fence & (b) in amazing density on right within yard. This species grows in great profusion between Redhouse & Perseverence in open grassveld with bush. -
Showing growth of Cotyledon orbiculta scattered over open veld not yet claimed as factory sites. Township of kwaMagxaki on hill in background. -
Kop with eastern half burnt out in the widespread fires which hit the whole area in jan 1998. Chrysanthemoides plentiful. -
Three fine plants of Gasteria acinacifolia on the wild open area at the cliff-edge in front of the houses. Others justout of the photo. Plants just over seeding. Photo shows plants still holding their own. For how long? -
Part of widespread burnout of veld. In foreground is Bitou, Chrysanthemoides monolifera, burnt a few days before, its dried leaves still attached. This same area was burnt out in 1986, twelve years ago but had recovered well. -
Group of five Cyrthanthus loddigesianus. Others flowering elsewhere but not as fine specimens. Wind spoilt picture. -
Two spp. of Boophone disticha growing naturally in undisturbed veld between houses. Others elsewhere -
In undisturbed veld two Boophone disticha with a few Cotyledon orbiculata immediately behind. -
Fine clusters of Cotyledon orbiculata in undisturbed veld. A mass in Bitou, Chrysanthomoides monolifera in immediate background. -
Natural vegetation in front of café. Six of several flowering Boophone disticha, some of many which had flowering there this season, a good year for them. Others nearby. -
A Haemanthus emerged after fire, a few dry leaves at base, 5 others, seeding, were in the same patch of bush veld. -
In natural vegetation in front of café. Eight seed-heads of Boophone disticha, some of which had flowering there this season, a good year for them. Others nearby. -
Recovery of vegetation after fire in January 1998. Fairly dense and succulent. -
Close-up of recovering vegegtation after fire in January 1998. Yellow flowers are of Zygophyllum uitenhagensis. -
Many Satyrium princeps flowering well among veld burnt in January 1998 (9 months before). Note burned plant remains; also wealth of herbage re-growth. -
Satyrium princeps in herbage regrowth after fire in jan 1998 (nine months before ). Fine spread of Gazania krebzii.
