Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 6 April 2013, at 10:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twelve-page programme identifies the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor the Honourable Justice L. Mpati, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie. It records the awarding of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa to Dr Carol Wynne Hofmeyr, who also addressed the congregation, and the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal to Professor Jeanette Dalziel Snowball. The programme lists graduates across the Faculty of Commerce, including undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in accounting, economics, financial management, information systems, taxation and business administration. Its extensive postgraduate research records studies on public participation in development projects in Nigeria, organisational change, social media marketing, employee retention, performance management in the Eastern Cape Department of Health, sustainable paper use at Rhodes University, recycling initiatives, waste management in the pharmaceutical industry and corporate strategy. Research in economics and financial markets examines investor sentiment, monetary policy, financial stress, government debt, regional monetary integration in Southern Africa, taxation of global e-commerce and the economic contribution of the Karoo accommodation industry. Doctoral research includes an investigation into international joint ventures and firm value among South African partner firms, alongside studies in information systems and mathematical economics. The programme identifies research supervisors and co-supervisors, preserving evidence of postgraduate scholarship and academic collaboration. Its concluding page reproduces the South African national anthem. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing academic careers, and documenting Rhodes University’s commerce-related research, academic leadership and ceremonial traditions in 2013.
