Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 13 April 2012, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The thirteen-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, senior leadership, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie. The ceremony included the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa on Ms Epainette Mbeki, who addressed the congregation, and the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award to Professor Herman Wasserman, the Distinguished Teaching Medal to Professor Anthea Corinne Garman, and the Distinguished Senior Research Medal and title of Distinguished Professor to Professor Paul Robert Maylam. The programme lists graduates across Pharmacy, Commerce, Humanities, Journalism, Fine Art, Music and related disciplines, recording undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and academic distinctions. Its postgraduate research covers diverse subjects, including Chinese influence on Namibian foreign policy, women and land reform in Zimbabwe, sign language policy in South Africa, post-apartheid racial integration in Grahamstown, fisheries co-management on the Eastern Cape Wild Coast, HIV-related stigma among service workers, mobile-phone use among young adults in Grahamstown, media representations of political conflict, and Indigenous language development. Doctoral research includes studies of young Liberian veterans, emerging farming institutions in Zimbabwe, medical professionals’ work ethic in Eastern Cape hospitals, migration and survival among Congolese migrants in Cape Town, and ecological crisis in South African speculative fiction. Research supervisors are named throughout the postgraduate listings, documenting scholarly collaboration. The programme concludes with the university songs The Purple and the White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, it supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications and awards, tracing academic careers, and documenting Rhodes University’s research priorities, institutional leadership and ceremonial traditions in 2012.
