- Description
- The inscription reads; “Sacred to the memory of Major General John Hare. C. B. & K. H. This distinguished officer served throughout the whole of the peninsular campaign; he commanded that gallant corps, the 27th inniskilling regiment at the battle of Waterloo. In the command of that regiment he continued until the year 1837, and was appointed Lieut. Governor and Commander of the forces in the Eastern Province of the Cape of Good Hope. After 49 years honoroubly and actively passed in the service of his country, he died on the 10th of December 1846, at the age of 64 years, on his passage to England, having been compelled to resign his command from illness brought on by extreme fatigue and exposure during the kafir war, and which shortly after resulted in his death. His remains were deposited in this island. This tablet is erected by his widow, who deeply deplores his loss."
