Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 22 April 2017, at 10:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. Presented in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, the 42-page programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings and identifies the University Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, senior leadership and faculty deans. It documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Professor Barney Pityana, who addressed the congregation. The programme lists graduates and distinctions across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral qualifications, particularly in Commerce, including degrees in Commerce, Economics, Business Science, Business Administration, Taxation, Financial Markets, Accounting, Management and Information Systems. Postgraduate thesis titles record research into sustainability reporting, responsible investment, corporate social responsibility, financial markets, taxation, water management, environmental sustainability, rural information and communication technology projects, entrepreneurship and organisational development. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for research, teaching and community engagement, including recognition of Professor Heila Sisitka, Professor Martin Hill, Professor Julie Coetzee, Dr Dion Nkomo and Dr Gladman Thondhlana, as well as the WRC Amanzi for Food Research Programme and the Recreational Fisheries Research Group. Extensive lists of academic honours, academic colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes document student achievement and institutional recognition. The programme preserves Rhodes University’s ceremonial traditions, including Gaudeamus Igitur and the national anthem. As a primary institutional record, it supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of the University’s academic history, research activity and student achievement in 2017.
