Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 21 April 2017, at 18:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. Presented in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, the 53-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, senior leadership and faculty deans, and outlines the formal proceedings. It records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Dr Marguerite Barankitse, who was invited to address the congregation. The programme lists graduates receiving diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across the Faculties of Pharmacy, Law, Commerce and Science, among others, and identifies distinctions and academic achievements. Extensive postgraduate thesis titles document research in pharmaceutical sciences, international humanitarian and competition law, environmental science, biodiversity, botany, fisheries, hydrology, geology, chemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics and computer science. The research topics reflect both regional and international concerns, including water quality and sanitation, climate change, conservation, ecosystem management, public health, sustainable livelihoods and technological innovation. The programme also preserves the university’s ceremonial traditions, including the singing of Gaudeamus Igitur and the South African national anthem. As a primary institutional record, it supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research activity and ceremonial practices in 2017.
