Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 21 April 2017, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. Presented in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, the programme identifies the university’s leadership, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and documents the conferral of certificates, diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across the Faculties of Education and Humanities, including qualifications in teacher education, journalism, music and higher education. It provides extensive graduate lists, identifies distinctions and academic honours, and records postgraduate research through master’s and doctoral thesis titles, departmental affiliations and supervisors. Research topics reflect the university’s academic interests in mathematics and science education, environmental learning, sustainability, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, multilingualism, literacy, higher education, educational technology and community-based learning, with studies spanning South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Mozambique. The programme also documents the awarding of an honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, to Shiela Sisulu, and recognises academic contributions through the Vice-Chancellor’s research, teaching and community engagement awards, including distinctions awarded to Professor Heila Sisitka, Professor Martin Hill, Professor Julie Coetzee, Dr Dion Nkomo and Dr Gladman Thondhlana, as well as the WRC Amanzi for Food Research Programme and the Recreational Fisheries Research Group. Lists of academic honours, colours and half-colours further preserve evidence of student achievement. As a primary institutional record, the programme supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research priorities and traditions in 2017.
