Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Thursday, 20 April 2017, at 17:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. Presented in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, the programme identifies university leadership and outlines the formal proceedings, including the awarding of the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, to Linton Kwesi Johnson, who addressed the congregation, and the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal to Dion Nkomo. It lists graduates across the faculties, including undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, and records distinctions and postgraduate research topics. The research represented spans journalism and media studies, African languages, history, political and international studies, psychology, sociology, creative writing, philosophy, geography and other disciplines. Topics include the #RhodesMustFall protests, Eastern Cape land and community histories, forced removals, gender and sexuality, public healthcare and language access, migration, social justice, African literary traditions, environmental sustainability, and political change in Southern Africa. The programme also documents research recognition and other academic awards. As a primary institutional record, it supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic achievements, research interests and ceremonial traditions in 2017.
