Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Thursday, 20 April 2017, at 10:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. Presented in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans, the programme identifies the University Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, deputy vice-chancellors, Council Chairperson, President of Convocation, faculty deans and Registrar, and outlines the formal proceedings. It records the awarding of the degree of Doctor of Fine Art, honoris causa, to Professor Penny Siopis, who also addressed the congregation, and recognises the WRC Amanzi for Food Research Programme for its community-engagement work. The programme lists graduates and distinctions across the Faculty of Humanities, including undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications in fine art, political and international studies, sociology, psychology, economics, African languages, history, philosophy and other disciplines. Postgraduate research topics include gender and representation, mental health, food security, labour migration, land reform, rural livelihoods, Indigenous African music education, Palestinian art and social space, and housing and livelihoods in South Africa. It also records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for research, teaching and community engagement, academic honours and colours, and scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional record, the programme supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic achievements, research interests, student recognition and ceremonial traditions in 2017.
