Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 10 April 2015, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, senior leadership and faculty deans, and outlines the formal order of proceedings. It records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Fine Art degree on David Nthubu Koloane, a South African artist, who addressed the congregation. Graduate listings cover the faculties of Commerce and Humanities, documenting undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, distinctions and academic achievements. The programme includes extensive lists of graduates in Economics, Business Science, Arts, Fine Art and Social Science, alongside postgraduate research topics addressing South African society, livelihoods, public health, education, labour, land redistribution, fisheries, water security, climate variability and political conflict. Fine Art master’s research is documented through thesis titles and associated exhibitions, while doctoral research includes studies of climate adaptation in rural Zimbabwe and call-centre labour in South Africa. The closing pages explain the historical origins and ceremonial practices of university graduation and reproduce the South African national anthem. As a primary institutional record, the programme supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research interests and graduation traditions in 2015.
