Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 10 April 2015, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, senior leadership and faculty deans, and outlines the order of proceedings. It records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Advocate Thulisile Nomkhosi Madonsela, who addressed the congregation, and recognises academic excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Medal awarded to Kevin John Barnard, the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal awarded to Eleonora Deborah Goosen, and the Distinguished Senior Research Medal awarded to Laurence Okeyo Juma. The programme lists graduates across the faculties of Pharmacy, Law, Commerce and Science, including undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and distinctions. Research titles document diverse scholarly work in pharmaceutical chemistry, law, economics, information systems, geology, mathematics, computer science, biodiversity, marine biology, environmental science and water resource management. Several projects address South African and African contexts, including rural livelihoods, natural resource use, environmental change, public health, and regional geological resources. The document also preserves the university song Vis Virtus Veritas and the formal traditions of academic procession and degree conferral. As a primary institutional record, it supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research activities and traditions in 2015.
