Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 2013, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eleven-page programme identifies the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor the Honourable Justice L. Mpati, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings and presentation of qualifications. It records the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Community Engagement to Alexandra Elizabeth Margaret Sutherland and the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award to Professor Catriona Ida Macleod. The programme lists graduates across the Faculty of Humanities, including Bachelor of Arts, honours and postgraduate qualifications in disciplines such as English, history, philosophy, psychology, drama, fine art, journalism, African languages, sociology and political and international studies. Postgraduate research topics include Indigenous Knowledge and intellectual property rights, representations of rape victims in classical literature, poverty and inequality in South Africa’s health system, postcolonial monuments and public sculpture in Zimbabwe, sustainable human settlements in South Africa, rural livelihoods and HIV/AIDS treatment adherence in Zimbabwe, and the history of German development policy in Africa between 1960 and 1990. Doctoral research includes Loveness Makonese’s study of coping with HIV and AIDS in marginal communities in Zimbabwe. The programme identifies research supervisors for several postgraduate theses, preserving evidence of academic collaboration and research activity. Its final page reproduces the South African national anthem. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing academic careers, and documenting Rhodes University’s humanities scholarship, research priorities and ceremonial traditions in 2013.
