Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 2013, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme identifies the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor the Honourable Justice L. Mpati, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, deputy vice-chancellors, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie. It records the presentation of Vusi Sydney Mahlasela for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa, followed by his address to the congregation. The programme lists graduates across Commerce, Humanities, Journalism, Fine Art, Music and other disciplines, documenting undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, distinctions and academic achievements. Its extensive postgraduate research records studies in psychology, journalism, political studies, African languages, creative writing, philosophy, history and environmental science. Topics include representations of rape victims in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, poverty and inequality in South Africa’s health system, trade union responses to labour casualisation in the Eastern Cape, Indigenous Knowledge and intellectual property rights, environmental reporting in Uganda, media representations of HIV/AIDS, and narratives of AIDS in South Africa between 1980 and 1995. The programme also documents scientific research on malaria-related proteins, ecological restoration, freshwater systems, marine biology, water-resource management, environmental contamination and mathematical modelling. Research supervisors are identified alongside many postgraduate theses, preserving evidence of scholarly collaboration. The closing pages reproduce the South African national anthem. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics, while documenting Rhodes University’s academic leadership, research activity and ceremonial traditions in 2013.
