Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremonies held on 4 and 5 April 2013 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown, including the installation of the Honourable Justice Lex Mpati as the university’s seventh Chancellor. The programme outlines the installation proceedings, identifies university leadership and faculty deans, and lists graduates across the Faculties of Education, Pharmacy, Commerce, Law and other disciplines. It documents undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, academic distinctions, scholarships, bursaries and prizes, as well as doctoral research addressing education leadership, mathematics and science education, environmental sustainability, pharmaceutical chemistry, legal studies and social justice. Notable research topics include Indigenous heritage in postcolonial southern African education, gender justice in science teacher education, HIV/AIDS education, hate speech regulation in South Africa, and the application of international criminal law to illegal natural resource exploitation in the Congo conflict. The programme also preserves the university’s ceremonial traditions, including the Chancellor’s installation pledge, the South African national anthem and Rhodes University’s Latin motto and anthem. As a primary institutional source, the document supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics, while documenting Rhodes University’s leadership, academic achievements and institutional traditions in 2013.
