Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown, documenting the university’s leadership, the ceremonial proceedings and the awarding of qualifications across the Faculty of Commerce. The twelve-page programme identifies Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, the deputy vice-chancellors, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie. It records the presentation of Geoffrey John de Jager for an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa, followed by his address to the congregation, and the presentation of Professor Alfredo Terzoli for the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Community Engagement. The programme lists graduates receiving Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business Science degrees, postgraduate diplomas in Enterprise Management, Accountancy and Taxation, honours degrees, and master’s and doctoral qualifications. Research topics include barriers to clean-energy investment in South Africa, financing for small and medium enterprises in Buffalo City, staff satisfaction in an East London hospital, sustainable management of indigenous forests in the Eastern Cape, organisational effectiveness in Zanzibar’s tourism sector, and performance management in Windhoek. Further postgraduate research examines financial markets, taxation, rural–urban migration and employment in Lesotho, virtual assets, national health insurance financing, monetary integration in the SADC region, and the economic feasibility of converting a sheep farm into a springbok ranch near Graaff-Reinet. The programme identifies research supervisors and co-supervisors, preserving evidence of academic collaboration and postgraduate scholarship. Its final page reproduces the university songs The Purple and the White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing academic careers and research supervision, and documenting Rhodes University’s commerce-related research and ceremonial traditions.
