Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, senior university leadership, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie. A central feature of the ceremony was the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa on Dr Leymah Roberta Gbowee, who also addressed the congregation. The programme lists qualifications across the Faculties of Education, Pharmacy, Commerce and Law, including advanced certificates, undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates. Postgraduate research includes pharmaceutical development of paediatric medicines, African traditional medicines, natural products from South African marine red algae, copyright law in the digital environment, climate change and the right to adequate food, environmental education, curriculum development, mathematics and science teaching, literacy and school leadership. Research also addresses educational practices and school management in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland. The postgraduate listings identify research supervisors and co-supervisors, documenting scholarly collaboration and academic activity. The programme notes academic distinctions, posthumous awards and acknowledgements of earlier graduation boycotts, and concludes with the university songs The Purple and the White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing academic careers and supervisory relationships, and documenting Rhodes University’s academic programmes and research priorities.
