Abstract
The digitised archival document is the programme for the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 13 April 2012, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ten-page scan includes handwritten annotations on the cover identifying it as an official pre-printed copy. The programme lists the university’s Chancellor, G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Council leadership, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie, providing a record of the university’s leadership and academic governance at the time. The ceremony included the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on Raymond Louw, who was invited to address the congregation, the award of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Medal to Dr Deborah Seddon, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal to Dr Samantha Wynne Vice. The programme documents graduates in the Faculty of Humanities, particularly Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts with Honours degrees, with distinctions recorded in English, Psychology, Philosophy, History, Journalism and Media Studies, Political and International Studies, African Languages, Linguistics, Drama, Music and other disciplines. The postgraduate section records Master of Music, Master of Fine Art and Master of Social Science qualifications, including research on female jazz vocalists in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth; musical performance in Saharaui refugee camps in Algeria; the work of Vladimir Tretchikoff; contemporary anarchism; lesbian representation in South African television; virtual experiences of flow; poverty reduction through old-age pensions; and social networks in Grahamstown East/Rhini. Further research addresses local government and community participation in basic service delivery, mental toughness training for young cricketers, and the balancing of academic work and motherhood. The programme also records the award of a Doctor of Literature degree to Gavin Peter Williams for a distinguished contribution to knowledge in political science, sociology and history. As a primary institutional record, this document is valuable for genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications and academic distinctions, tracing postgraduate research and supervision, and documenting Rhodes University’s institutional history and scholarly priorities in 2012.
