Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Thursday, 12 April 2012, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor S. Badat, senior leadership, faculty deans and Registrar S. Fourie, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings. It records the presentation of an honorary Doctor of Science degree honoris causa to Professor Michael Noel Bruton, alongside the awarding of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal to Professor Martin Herrer Villet and the conferment of the title of Distinguished Professor on Professor Christopher David McQuaid and Professor Tebello Nyokong. The programme lists undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral graduates, particularly from the Faculty of Science, documenting academic distinctions across computer science, chemistry, environmental science, biochemistry, mathematics, marine biology, ichthyology, fisheries science and information systems. Postgraduate research topics include freshwater fish ecology and conservation, marine spatial planning in Algoa Bay, environmental water management, biodiversity, renewable energy, biotechnology, malaria research, cancer biology, water pollution, climate change and sustainable natural-resource management. Research also addresses culturally relevant computer interfaces, software performance, information security, and the effects of environmental change on aquatic ecosystems. The programme identifies research supervisors and co-supervisors, preserving evidence of postgraduate scholarship and academic collaboration. As a primary institutional source, this document supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing academic careers, and documenting Rhodes University’s scientific research priorities, academic leadership and ceremonial traditions in 2012.
