Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 2011, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-one-page programme documents the conferral of qualifications across several faculties, including Education, Pharmacy and Law, with detailed listings of graduates, academic distinctions, postgraduate qualifications, research degrees, scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic honours. A significant feature of the ceremony is the presentation of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to Advocate George Bizos SC and Ms Lillian Lydia Nomathemba Cingo, both of whom are listed in the order of proceedings as speakers addressing the congregation. The programme preserves the names and academic credentials of graduates, including recipients of undergraduate degrees, advanced and postgraduate certificates, diplomas, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. The postgraduate research records offer valuable insight into the university’s scholarly activities in 2011. Research topics include educational leadership and teaching practice, environmental education and sustainability, technology-enhanced learning, mathematics education, pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical formulation, HIV/AIDS treatment and medicine use, labour relations, South African trust law and comparative legal systems. The Education faculty listings, in particular, document research undertaken in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and other contexts, addressing teacher development, learner-centred education, environmental management, literacy, curriculum implementation and educational leadership. Pharmacy research includes investigations into medicine adherence, antiretroviral interactions, neuroprotection and pharmaceutical formulations. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for distinguished research, teaching and community engagement, recognising Alan Nicholas Hodgson, James Gambiza, Janice Leigh Limson, Juanita Finestone-Praeg and Mandla Gagayi, alongside the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award to Anton Robert Krueger. Additional sections document environmental awards, academic honours, academic colours and half colours, student leadership awards, and an extensive range of scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The opening pages preserve the university’s senior leadership, faculty deans and ceremonial procedures, while the closing pages record institutional songs and the National Anthem, reflecting Rhodes University’s academic and ceremonial traditions. As a primary institutional record, this programme provides evidence of Rhodes University’s academic history, graduate achievement, postgraduate research, institutional leadership and recognition of excellence. It is a useful resource for biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications, studies of historical research themes and academic supervision, and the documentation of the university’s contribution to higher education and scholarship in South Africa and the wider region.
