Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 2011, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nineteen-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, postgraduate diploma, master’s and doctoral qualifications across the university’s faculties, with extensive listings of graduates, academic distinctions, awards, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. A significant feature of the ceremony is the conferral of the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa on Dr Basil Scott Moore, who addressed the congregation. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards recognising excellence in research, teaching and community engagement, including awards to Alan Nicholas Hodgson, James Gambiza, Janice Leigh Limson, Juanita Finestone-Praeg and Mandla Gagayi, as well as the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award to Anton Robert Krueger. The postgraduate listings preserve detailed information about research undertaken at Rhodes University, particularly in sociology, psychology, development studies, political and international studies, music, fine art and journalism. Doctoral research includes studies of the oil enclave economy and sexual relationships in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, labour relations in a Nigerian oil refinery, and the life and work of E.J.N. Mabuza. Master’s research addresses topics such as concussion among adolescent rugby players, the South African welfare regime, music performance and identity in Grahamstown, and the use of aurally based techniques in brass education. The programme further documents the university’s academic honours and colours, student leadership awards, environmental awards, and a wide range of scholarships and bursaries, providing evidence of student achievement and institutional recognition in 2011. Its opening pages preserve the university’s leadership and faculty structures at the time, while the closing sections reflect its ceremonial traditions through institutional songs and the National Anthem. As a primary institutional record, the programme supports historical research into Rhodes University’s academic development, graduate biographies and qualification verification, the history of postgraduate scholarship and supervision, institutional leadership, and the evolution of student awards and academic recognition. It also provides a valuable resource for tracing scholarly networks and documenting the university’s contribution to research and higher education in South Africa and beyond.
