Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 2011, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-three-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral degrees, primarily within the Faculty of Humanities, and provides a detailed record of graduates, their academic disciplines, distinctions and postgraduate research. The programme includes the award of the degree of Doctor of Literature honoris causa to Dr Tariq Ali, who addressed the congregation, as well as the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award to Anton Robert Krueger and the Distinguished Teaching Medal to Juanita Finestone-Praeg. The Vice-Chancellor’s awards listed in the programme also recognise contributions to research, teaching and community engagement, with recipients including Alan Nicholas Hodgson, James Gambiza, Janice Leigh Limson and Mandla Gagayi. The postgraduate research titles provide valuable evidence of scholarship across anthropology, African languages, journalism and media studies, psychology, philosophy, political and international studies, history, drama, environmental studies and linguistics. Research topics include biodiversity and environmental narratives, African language intellectualisation, media ethics, migration, gender representation, social identity, psychological interventions, democratic governance and the preservation of cultural memory. The doctoral listings document research in psychology, English language and linguistics, and politics, including studies of procrastination, concussion in rugby players, children's literature and democratic governance in Lesotho. The programme also preserves the university's ceremonial traditions, including the academic procession, institutional songs and the National Anthem. As a primary institutional record, this document supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and academic distinctions, the tracing of postgraduate research and supervisory relationships, and the documentation of Rhodes University's academic, cultural and institutional history in 2011.
