Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Faculty of Science graduation ceremony held on Thursday, 7 April 2011, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-three-page programme identifies the university’s senior leadership and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal to Janice Leigh Limson, the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal to James Gambiza, the Distinguished Senior Research Medal to Alan Nicholas Hodgson, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa to Herbert Kretzmer, who addressed the congregation. The programme lists graduates receiving Bachelor of Science degrees, with distinctions across disciplines including biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geology, mathematics, microbiology, zoology, marine biology and information systems. The honours, master’s and doctoral listings document research on biodiversity conservation, aquatic and marine ecology, environmental contamination, water-resource management, biotechnology, malaria research, pharmaceutical applications, mineral exploration, mathematical modelling and information security. Research titles, academic departments and supervisors are recorded throughout, preserving evidence of postgraduate scholarship and academic collaboration. The programme concludes with the conferment of a Doctor of Science degree on Alan Kenneth Whitfield in recognition of his distinguished contribution to estuarine research, alongside the university’s ceremonial songs. As a primary institutional source, this document supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications and academic distinctions, tracing research careers and supervisory relationships, and documenting Rhodes University’s scientific scholarship and institutional history in 2011.
