Abstract
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 9 April 2010, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme documents the conferral of qualifications across several faculties, including Education, Pharmacy and Law, as well as postgraduate degrees, academic distinctions, university honours, student leadership awards, and scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, with S. Badat serving as Vice-Chancellor, and included an address by the Honourable Ms Justice Kathleen Satchwell, who was presented for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). The programme provides extensive records of graduates receiving Advanced Certificates in Education across specialisations such as Early Childhood Development, Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase, School Leadership, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics Education, Science Education and Technology Education. It also records Bachelor of Education qualifications, postgraduate certificates and diplomas in education, and honours and master’s degrees. The postgraduate research documented in the Education faculty covers educational leadership and management, environmental education, curriculum development, multilingualism, information and communication technology in education, school-community relationships, mathematics education and teacher development. Several studies focus on educational practice and policy in Namibia and rural Eastern Cape schools. Pharmacy graduates are recorded under the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master of Science in Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. Research topics include pharmaceutical formulation and drug delivery, bioavailability and bioequivalence testing, bioethanol production from waste paper, and pharmaceutical care interventions for type 2 diabetes. The Faculty of Law section lists candidates for the Bachelor of Laws degree. The programme’s honours section recognises Pierre William Froneman and Laurence Stuart Wright with the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal; Ruth Helen Simbao with the Distinguished Research Medal; Kevin Wayne Maree with the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal; and Marie Jennifer Rosabelle Boswell with the Distinguished Teaching Medal. Kenneth Mlungisi Ngcoza and Joyce Dorothy Sewry received the Distinguished Award for Community Engagement, while Leonhard Praeg received the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award. Further sections document environmental awards, including recognition of Dan Wylie and the Galela Amanzi student society or residence, alongside Dean of Students Leadership Awards, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours. The extensive final sections list recipients of scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Rhodes University postgraduate scholarships, Henderson postgraduate scholarships, Allan Gray scholarships and numerous faculty-specific academic awards. The closing pages also explain the tradition and significance of graduation and reproduce university songs and ceremonial texts. As a primary institutional record, this programme is valuable for researching Rhodes University’s history, verifying qualifications and academic distinctions, tracing individual educational biographies, and studying postgraduate research, student achievement and scholarship provision in 2010.
