Abstract
-
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 9 April 2010, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. This sixteen-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, academic distinctions, university honours, student leadership awards, and scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The ceremony was attended by the university’s Chancellor, G.J. Gerwel, and Vice-Chancellor, S. Badat, and included an address by Dr Rob Davies, Minister of Trade and Industry. The programme records graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, including Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Business Science qualifications, as well as postgraduate diplomas and honours degrees in accounting, economics, management, information systems and taxation. Postgraduate research is represented by master’s degrees in business administration, commerce and economics, with research addressing sustainable development indicators, climate-change risk management, public transport service delivery, employee engagement, environmental reporting by South African banks, financial markets, social democracy and labour conditions in the Albany district. Notable research includes Mathew Gomes Menezes’s study of the potential economic impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on South Africa and Tamaryn Jean Roberts’s thesis on farm wages and working conditions in the Albany district between 1957 and 2008. The programme also documents the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, including the Distinguished Senior Research Medal awarded to Pierre William Froneman and Laurence Stuart Wright, the Distinguished Research Medal awarded to Ruth Helen Simbao, the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal awarded to Kevin Wayne Maree, and the Distinguished Teaching Medal awarded to Marie Jennifer Rosabelle Boswell. Kenneth Mlungisi Ngcoza and Joyce Dorothy Sewry received the Distinguished Award for Community Engagement, while Leonhard Praeg received the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award. Further sections record environmental awards, Dean of Students Leadership Awards, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, and extensive lists of scholarship and bursary recipients. The document is a valuable primary source for institutional history, biographical and genealogical research, verification of academic achievements, and the study of Rhodes University’s Commerce faculty, postgraduate research, academic recognition and student life in 2010.
