Abstract
-
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 9 April 2010, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents graduates, academic distinctions, postgraduate qualifications, doctoral research, university awards, academic honours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes across the institution’s faculties. The ceremony included addresses by visual artist Marlene Dumas and jazz musician Abdullah Ibrahim, both of whom were awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees. The programme identifies Ruth Helen Simbao as the recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal, Laurence Stuart Wright and Pierre William Froneman as recipients of the Distinguished Senior Research Medal, Kevin Wayne Maree as recipient of the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal, Marie Jennifer Rosabelle Boswell as recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Medal, and Leonhard Praeg as recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award. The graduate listings cover Humanities disciplines, including social science, fine art, journalism, music, development studies, psychology, sociology, anthropology and political and international studies, alongside postgraduate diplomas and master’s and doctoral degrees. Notable doctoral research includes Penelope Susan Bernard’s Messages from the deep: Water divinities, dreams and diviners in Southern Africa; Riana Henning’s psychobiographical study of General Christiaan Rudolph de Wet; and Tendai Murisa’s analysis of social organisation and agency following accelerated land reform in Zimbabwe. Other postgraduate research examines abortion discourse in a low-income Eastern Cape community, black male homosexual identity in contemporary South Africa, trade union investment schemes, online shopping behaviour and representations of widowhood and memory in visual art. The programme also records environmental awards, student leadership awards, academic colours and half-colours, and an extensive range of institutional and external scholarships and prizes. As a primary institutional record, it provides valuable evidence for biographical and genealogical research, verification of academic achievements, the history of postgraduate research and supervision, and the documentation of Rhodes University’s academic and cultural history in 2010.
