Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 17 April 2009, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme documents undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications awarded in the Faculty of Science, including distinctions across Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Zoology, Fisheries Science and Information Systems. Postgraduate research addresses biodiversity conservation, estuarine and marine ecology, fisheries management, invasive species, environmental sustainability, water-resource management, geological exploration, pharmaceutical applications, biotechnology, mathematical modelling and computer networks. Research titles and supervisors are recorded for numerous postgraduate candidates, preserving evidence of scholarly activity and academic collaboration. Notable studies examine water-resource management in the Eastern Cape, the restoration of degraded subtropical thicket, HIV-protease inhibitors, marine ecosystems and the effects of HIV/AIDS on household food security. The programme also lists Vice-Chancellor’s awards, including the Distinguished Senior Research Medal awarded to Peter Vale, the Distinguished Senior Teaching Medal to Russell Harold Kaschula, the Distinguished Teaching Medal to Heila Betrie Sisitka, and the Book Award to Daniel Alban Wylie. Further sections document academic honours, colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing postgraduate research and supervision, and documenting Rhodes University’s scientific scholarship and institutional history in 2009.
