Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Thursday, 16 April 2009, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme documents graduates, academic distinctions, postgraduate research, institutional awards, academic honours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes, with a particular focus on the Faculty of Commerce and the Rhodes Investec Business School. The ceremony included the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa on Lynette Marais, who addressed the congregation. The graduate listings cover Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Business Science qualifications, as well as honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates in economics, accounting, taxation, financial markets, management, organisational psychology and information systems. Postgraduate research explores strategic leadership, organisational performance, quality management, employee engagement, environmental compliance, financial markets, monetary policy, banking, stock-market development and economic integration within the Southern African Development Community. Other studies examine small-business development, healthcare management, land reform, taxation and the economic potential of small towns in the Eastern Cape. Doctoral research includes an institutional analysis of community and home-based care for people affected by HIV/AIDS in rural Malawi. The programme also recognises Peter Vale with the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal, Russell Harold Kaschula with the Distinguished Senior Teaching Medal, Heila Betrie Sisitka with the Distinguished Teaching Medal, and Daniel Alban Wylie with the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award. Further sections document academic honours, colours and half-colours, student leadership recognition, and extensive scholarship and bursary awards. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing postgraduate research and supervision, and documenting Rhodes University’s academic and institutional history in 2009.
