Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 29 March 2008, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme documents graduates of the Faculty of Commerce, including undergraduate, honours, postgraduate diploma, master’s and doctoral qualifications in Commerce, Economics, Accountancy, Business Science, Financial Markets, Management, Information Systems, Taxation and Mathematical Statistics. It includes the names of graduates awarded distinctions, recipients of academic honours and colours, and beneficiaries of scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The programme records the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws awarded to Reuel Jethro Khoza and the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Teaching Medal presented to David Andrew Sewry. Postgraduate research topics reflect the economic, social and organisational concerns of the period, including customer satisfaction in financial institutions, leadership styles in legal firms, information technology outsourcing in the Eastern Cape public sector, sustainability in municipal governance, corporate citizenship, service delivery, foreign direct investment, taxation and organisational culture. The doctoral theses address corporate social responsibility and multiracial advertising in South Africa, managing conflict across cultures and identities in the automotive industry, and economic research methods relating to South Africa’s agricultural sector. The programme also identifies recipients of major postgraduate scholarships, including Andrew Mellon Foundation scholarships, Rhodes University scholarships and Rhodes Governor’s scholarships. As a primary institutional record, this document supports research into Rhodes University’s academic history, graduate biographies, postgraduate research, the development of Commerce disciplines, academic achievement and the history of scholarship funding in South Africa in 2008.
