Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 28 March 2008, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme documents graduates across the Faculties of Law, Humanities and Commerce, including undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, academic distinctions, awards, scholarships and bursaries. It records honorary degrees awarded to William Joseph Kentridge (Doctor of Fine Art), Pius Nkonzo Langa (Doctor of Laws) and John Pilger (Doctor of Literature). Postgraduate research addresses legal rights and legislation, visual art, music, journalism, psychology, economics, international relations, environmental studies and social development. Notable studies examine housing rights and local government in the Eastern Cape, workplace relations in the public sector, informal-sector livelihoods in Makana Municipality, and the framing of borders in Western art. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for research, teaching, community engagement and scholarship, including recognition of Isadore Kanfer, David Andrew Sewry, Joanna Elizabeth Burgess, Carla Zelda Tsampiras and Brenda Lynn Schmahmann. As a primary institutional source, it supports biographical research, qualification verification, tracing postgraduate scholarship and documenting Rhodes University’s academic and institutional history in 2008.
