Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 28 March 2008, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The 17-page programme lists Humanities graduates, academic distinctions, postgraduate research, institutional awards, scholarships and bursaries. Research topics span literature, African languages, history, politics, journalism, psychology, sociology and the performing arts, addressing issues such as language policy, HIV/AIDS responses in the Eastern Cape, land redistribution in Zimbabwe, gender equality, sexual violence, apartheid history and South–South relations. The programme records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, including the Distinguished Research Medal awarded to Joanna Elizabeth Burgess, the Distinguished Senior Research Medal to Isadore Kanfer, and the Distinguished Teaching Medal to Carla Zelda Tsampiras. It also documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Jonathan Brian Shapiro. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports biographical research, qualification verification, tracing postgraduate scholarship and documenting Rhodes University’s academic and institutional history in 2008.
