Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 28 March 2008, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The 21-page programme documents graduates across the Faculties of Pharmacy and Science, including undergraduate degrees, honours, master’s qualifications and doctoral degrees, with distinctions recorded for numerous candidates. It provides detailed information on postgraduate research, including candidate names, qualifications, academic departments, thesis titles and, in many cases, supervisors and co-supervisors. The research represented spans pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology, biotechnology, microbiology, computer science, information systems, mathematics, physics, geology, botany, zoology, marine biology, fisheries science and environmental science. Several studies have particular relevance to the Eastern Cape and South Africa, addressing estuarine ecology, biodiversity conservation, water allocation in the Kat River Valley, natural resource harvesting in communal lands, the effects of elephants on subtropical thicket ecosystems, and the use of information technology to support transformation in higher education. The programme also records the award of a Doctor of Pharmacy and doctoral research in areas including carnivore ecology, molecular biochemistry and pharmaceutical science. A posthumous award is recorded for Rina Annette Roets, whose Master of Education research examined information technology support for transformation in South African higher education institutions. The opening pages identify the university’s senior leadership and outline the ceremony’s proceedings, including distinguished awards for community engagement and research, and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws on Bernard Lewis Fanaroff. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports the verification of academic qualifications, the identification of graduates and researchers, the tracing of postgraduate research and supervisors, and the documentation of Rhodes University’s academic history and research priorities in 2008.
