Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 14 April 2007, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies the university’s leadership and faculty deans, outlines the order of proceedings, and documents the awarding of certificates, diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. A notable feature of the ceremony was the conferral of the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Graca Machel, who also addressed the congregation. The programme includes extensive graduate listings for the Faculty of Education, covering qualifications in foundation-phase education, environmental education, English language teaching, mathematics literacy, mathematics education, science education, technology education, educational leadership and management, and general education theory and practice. Postgraduate research topics documented on pages 11–18 address educational leadership, curriculum implementation, environmental education, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, literacy development, teacher education and professional learning, school governance, and sustainable resource use. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal, Research Medal and Distinguished Teaching Medal, as well as academic honours, academic colours and half-colours. Pages 22 onwards list scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Allan Gray scholarships, Henderson postgraduate scholarships and subject-specific academic awards. As a primary institutional record, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, educational research, graduate achievements, institutional leadership and recognition of scholarly excellence in 2007. It can support historical research, verification of qualifications and awards, biographical and genealogical enquiries, and the preservation of the university’s institutional memory.
