Abstract
This digitised archival document comprises the programme for the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 8 April 2006, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme documents the university’s formal conferral of qualifications, with a particular emphasis on the Faculty of Science, including bachelor’s degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees, Doctor of Philosophy degrees and the Doctor of Science degree. It identifies the university’s principal office-bearers and academic leadership at the time, including Chancellor C.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Johnson, the Chairperson of Council, the President of Convocation, faculty deans and the Registrar. The proceedings include the presentation of Johann Reinder Erlers Lutjeharms for the honorary degree of Doctor of Science, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to scientific knowledge. The programme records the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal to Professor Martin Patrick Hill, the Distinguished Senior Research Medal to Professor Sarah Elizabeth Radloff, the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal to Professor Michael Trevor Davies-Coleman, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Prize to Professor Peter Vale. A substantial portion of the document lists graduates of the Faculty of Science across disciplines including Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics and Electronics, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Zoology, Entomology, Marine Biology, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Geology, Geography, Environmental Science, Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, and Mathematical Statistics. The postgraduate sections provide detailed records of research undertaken at Rhodes University, including thesis titles, academic departments and, in many cases, supervisors. Research topics address environmental management, poverty alleviation, land reform in Zimbabwe, coastal governance, fisheries and marine conservation, biodiversity, biological control, ecological risk assessment, software engineering, telecommunications, internet connectivity in schools, mathematical modelling, chemistry and astrophysics. The doctoral research records include studies of plant development, marine ecology, forestry workloads, water-resource management, shark population dynamics, marine conservation, mathematical structures, computer networking, ionospheric modelling, environmental livelihoods and chemical analysis. The programme also preserves lists of academic honours, academic colours and academic half-colours, as well as extensive records of scholarships, bursaries and prizes awarded to students. These include postgraduate and doctoral scholarships, honours scholarships, international and research funding, and awards supporting studies in science, environmental studies, fisheries, the humanities and other fields. As a primary institutional record, this programme is a valuable resource for Rhodes University’s institutional history and the study of its academic leadership, scientific research, graduate achievements and postgraduate training in 2006. It supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and academic distinctions, the tracing of scholarly careers, and historical analysis of scientific research and higher education in South Africa. The detailed graduate listings and research titles also provide evidence of the university’s disciplinary strengths, research priorities and contribution to scientific and scholarly development during this period.
