Abstract
This digitised archival document comprises the programme for the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 2006, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme records the university’s formal graduation proceedings and provides a comprehensive listing of qualifications awarded across the Faculties of Education and Law, including diplomas, advanced certificates, bachelor’s degrees, honours qualifications, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. It identifies the university’s principal office-bearers and academic leadership at the time, including Chancellor C.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Johnson, the Chairperson of Council, the President of Convocation, faculty deans and the Registrar. The proceedings include an address by Derek Brian Riley, who was presented for the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. A substantial portion of the programme documents qualifications awarded in Education, with specialisations including Foundation Phase teaching, Environmental Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Technology Education, English Language Teaching, Information Communication Technology, Educational Leadership and Management, and General Education Theory and Practice. The Faculty of Law section records the award of Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees, including postgraduate research on administrative justice, international criminal law and discrimination against people with mental health problems in the workplace. The programme also preserves detailed records of postgraduate research in Education. Thesis topics include second-language learning, school management, participative leadership, environmental learning materials, curriculum development, organisational change, teacher assessment practices, workplace-based learning and community engagement. Doctoral research includes studies of the construction of the needs of English second-language learners in examinations, self-regulated learning, strategic leadership and change, experiential learning in pharmacy education, educational policy implementation and sentencing in child sexual abuse cases. The document further records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for distinguished research and teaching, the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Prize, academic honours, academic colours and academic half-colours. Its concluding sections list scholarships, bursaries, prizes and other forms of academic recognition. As a primary institutional record, this programme is a valuable resource for Rhodes University’s institutional history and the study of its academic leadership, graduate achievements, postgraduate research and educational priorities in 2006. It supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, historical analysis of teacher education and legal scholarship, and the preservation of the university’s institutional memory.
