Abstract
-
This digitised archival document comprises the programme for the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 2006, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme documents the university’s academic leadership, formal graduation proceedings, qualifications awarded, postgraduate research, academic distinctions and student achievements during the 2006 graduation period. It identifies Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Johnson, the Chairperson of Council, the President of Convocation, faculty deans and the Registrar. The order of proceedings includes an address by Trevor Andrew Manuel, who was presented for the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. The programme records graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, including recipients of Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Business Science degrees, as well as postgraduate diplomas and honours qualifications. It also lists postgraduate qualifications, including Master of Business Administration, Master of Commerce and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Of particular research value are the postgraduate thesis titles and associated academic information, which document research undertaken in economics, economic history, taxation, financial markets, management, information systems and business administration. Topics include industrial development, unemployment in the Eastern Cape, organisational culture, service management, financial planning, monetary policy, investment, corporate social investment and the economic valuation of cultural events. The programme identifies Jeanette Dalziel Snowball as the recipient of a Doctor of Philosophy degree for her research on the economic valuation of cultural events in developing countries, combining market and non-market valuation techniques at the South African National Arts Festival, under the supervision of Professor A.C.M. Webb. Further sections document the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for research and teaching, academic honours, academic colours and academic half-colours. The final sections list scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Allan Gray scholarships, Henderson postgraduate scholarships, Rhodes University scholarships and numerous discipline-specific awards. As a primary institutional record, this programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic history, graduate achievements, research priorities and traditions of academic recognition in 2006. It supports institutional history, biographical research, verification of qualifications and awards, studies of postgraduate research, and the preservation of the university’s institutional memory.
