Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 2006, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-page programme provides a detailed record of the university’s academic leadership, graduation proceedings, qualifications awarded, postgraduate research, academic distinctions and student achievements. The programme identifies Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Johnson, the Chairperson of Council, the President of Convocation, faculty deans and the Registrar. It also records the address by Dr Peter Magubane, who was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Pages 3–7 list graduates from the Faculty of Humanities, including recipients of qualifications in Social Work, Social Science, Fine Art, Journalism, Music and various postgraduate diplomas. Pages 8–12 document undergraduate honours qualifications and postgraduate degrees, including Master of Arts, Master of Social Science, Master of Fine Art, Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy. The postgraduate research records provide valuable information about individual research topics, academic departments, thesis titles and, in several cases, supervisors. Research themes include South African politics and governance, land reform, media and journalism, psychology, philosophy, cultural identity, environmental studies, public broadcasting and regional development. Pages 13–14 record the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, academic honours, academic colours and academic half-colours, recognising outstanding research, teaching and student achievement. The later pages document scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Allan Gray scholarships, Alfred Beit Scholarships and numerous discipline-specific awards. As a primary institutional record, this programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic history and traditions in 2006. It supports historical and institutional research, biographical and genealogical enquiries, verification of academic achievements, research into postgraduate scholarship and student funding, and the preservation of the university’s institutional memory.
