Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Thursday, 6 April 2006, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme documents the university’s leadership, the order of proceedings, and the awarding of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across several faculties. The programme identifies Chancellor G.I. Gerwel, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Johnson, the Chairperson of Council, the President of Convocation, faculty deans and the Registrar. Ms Piyushi Kotecha was scheduled to address the congregation. The academic records include graduates from the Faculties of Pharmacy, Humanities and Commerce, with qualifications ranging from the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Journalism to postgraduate diplomas and research degrees. Pages 10–11 record postgraduate research in pharmaceutical sciences, including studies on sustained-release medicines, paediatric formulations, neuroprotective effects, pharmaceutical analysis and drug interactions. The programme also documents doctoral research in pharmacology and pharmaceutics, with thesis titles and, in several cases, supervisors. Pages 12–16 list the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, providing evidence of student achievement and institutional recognition. The final sections, spanning pages 17–26, provide extensive records of scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Henderson Postgraduate Scholarships, Rhodes University scholarships, Rhodes Foundation awards and numerous discipline-specific prizes across the humanities, sciences, law, commerce and pharmacy. As a primary institutional record, this programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic history, graduate achievements, postgraduate research, funding opportunities and traditions of scholarly recognition in 2006. It supports historical and institutional research, verification of qualifications and awards, biographical enquiries, and the preservation of Rhodes University’s institutional memory.
