Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 2 April 2005, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The seventeen-page programme documents qualifications awarded across the Faculties of Humanities and Commerce, with particular emphasis on undergraduate and postgraduate achievements, research degrees, academic distinctions and institutional awards. The Humanities listings cover Fine Art, Journalism, Social Work, English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Anthropology, Political and International Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, Drama, Music and Environmental Science, among other disciplines. The Commerce section includes postgraduate qualifications in Enterprise Management, Media Management and related fields. The postgraduate research listings provide valuable detail on individual research projects, thesis titles, academic departments and supervisors. Topics reflect a wide range of scholarly concerns, including South African history and historiography, indigenous knowledge and rock art management, environmental governance in the Eastern Cape, journalism and public communication, clinical psychology, political transformation, economic development and international relations. Examples include research into ecosystem dynamics around Mt Coke State Forest, indigenous management of rock art sites in KwaZulu-Natal, the politics of humanitarian organisations during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and the development of Southern African industrial economies. The programme also records doctoral research in Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Economic History, and Political and International Studies. The institutional honours section recognises distinguished research and teaching through the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, including the Distinguished Senior Research Medal awarded to Professor Vivian Anne de Klerk and teaching medals awarded to Professor Christiaan Edward Johannes Botha and Trevor Laurence Amos. Further pages list recipients of academic honours, academic colours and academic half-colours, alongside an extensive register of scholarships, bursaries and prizes supporting undergraduate and postgraduate study. As a primary institutional record, this programme is valuable for documenting Rhodes University’s academic history in 2005, tracing graduates and their qualifications, identifying historical research topics and supervisors, and examining the university’s recognition of scholarly achievement and its support for emerging researchers.
