Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 1 April 2005, at 08:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page document focuses on the Faculty of Science and provides a comprehensive record of graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees with honours, master’s degrees and doctoral qualifications. The undergraduate listings cover a broad range of disciplines, including Computer Science, Information Systems, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Geology, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science. Academic distinctions are recorded against individual graduates, while the postgraduate sections provide detailed information about research degrees, thesis titles, academic departments and, in many cases, supervisors. The research represented reflects Rhodes University’s scientific and regional research strengths, with topics addressing Eastern Cape biodiversity and ecosystems, fisheries management, marine organisms, environmental disturbance, freshwater resources, geological processes, computational systems and biotechnology. Examples include research on the feeding ecology of reintroduced cheetahs in the Eastern Cape, coastal dune dynamics at Bushman’s River Mouth, the ecology of suburban Olive Thrushes, the management of South African fisheries and rainfall variability in Southern Africa. The programme also records doctoral research across disciplines such as Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Chemistry, Zoology and Entomology, Geology, Biotechnology and Hydrology. The final sections document institutional recognition of academic excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s awards, academic honours, academic colours and an extensive list of scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional record, this programme is a valuable resource for researching Rhodes University’s scientific and postgraduate research history, tracing individual graduates and their qualifications, identifying historical research topics and supervisors, and documenting the university’s academic achievements and scholarship support in 2005.
