Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 3 April 2004, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme documents the conferral of qualifications across the Faculty of Commerce, including undergraduate degrees in Commerce, Economics, Accountancy and Business Science; honours degrees; postgraduate diplomas; master’s degrees; and doctoral qualifications. It includes the names of graduates, distinctions awarded, postgraduate research titles, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, and an extensive record of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes. The ceremony featured an address by Professor Deryck Schreuder and the conferral of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Hugh Sidney Herman and Deryck Marshall Schreuder. Professor Geoffrey Gordon Antrobus received the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Medal, while Professor Tebello Nyokong and Professor Anthony John Booth were recognised with the Distinguished Senior Research Medal and Distinguished Research Medal, respectively. The postgraduate research topics reflect the Faculty’s engagement with business administration, management, economics, financial markets, taxation and organisational studies, with particular attention to South African institutions and regional development. Examples include research into service quality in the banking and motor manufacturing sectors, sustainability reporting and corporate governance at Eskom, tourism development in the Eastern Cape, smart cards and the economic behaviour of rural pensioners, and the economic geography of a Southern African Development Community free-trade area. The programme also documents the university’s scholarship and bursary awards, recognising academic achievement and supporting postgraduate study across disciplines. As a primary institutional record, this document provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, graduate achievements, research priorities and traditions of academic recognition in 2004. It serves as a resource for institutional history, biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of higher education, commerce and economic scholarship in South Africa at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
