Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 2 April 2004, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme documents the awarding of qualifications across the Faculties of Education, Humanities, Law and Pharmacy, including diplomas, undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, postgraduate certificates and diplomas, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. The ceremony included the conferral of honorary degrees of Doctor of Literature on John Wesley de Gruchy and Doctor of Laws on Lex Mpati, who also addressed the congregation. The programme recognises academic excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal awarded to Professor Tebello Nyokong, the Distinguished Research Medal awarded to Professor Anthony John Booth, and the Distinguished Teaching Medals awarded to Professor Geoffrey Gordon Antrobus and Professor Roderick Charles Fox. Postgraduate research topics reflect the university’s interdisciplinary scholarship and regional engagement, including Indigenous agricultural knowledge in curriculum development, environmental education and wetland conservation, educational leadership in Namibia, academic literacy, South African constitutional and contract law, clinical psychology, the social impacts of AIDS-related losses, and the neuroprotective properties of melatonin. The programme also records academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional record, it preserves evidence of Rhodes University’s educational and research activities, graduate achievements, academic recognition and intellectual priorities in 2004. It provides a valuable resource for biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications, and the study of the university’s institutional history and contribution to education and scholarship in South Africa and the wider region.
