This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 2 April 2004, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme documents undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications in the Faculty of Science, including distinctions across disciplines such as Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Zoology, Geology, Environmental Science, Marine Biology and Fisheries Science. It records the conferral of honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws on Brian Patrick Gilbertson and Doctor of Literature on Charles van Onselen, who also addressed the congregation. The Vice-Chancellor’s awards recognise research excellence through medals awarded to Tebello Nyokong and Anthony John Booth, and teaching excellence through an award to Roderick Charles Fox. Postgraduate research addresses biodiversity, fisheries management, marine ecology, biotechnology, environmental sustainability, geological processes, mathematical modelling and computer systems, including studies of Eastern Cape ecosystems, sustainable fishery resources, biological pest control, water pollution and industrial waste treatment.
