Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 2 April 2004, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in the Faculty of Humanities, including academic distinctions, doctoral research, awards and scholarships. Disciplines represented include History, Philosophy, English, Linguistics, Journalism and Media Studies, Psychology, Anthropology, Drama, Music, Geography, Environmental Science and International Studies. Postgraduate research topics address Rastafari children in South Africa, HIV/AIDS, indigenous languages in higher education, environmental management in the Eastern Cape, land reform, gender and human rights, media representation, political identity and music and postcolonialism. Doctoral studies examine destructive narcissism, censorship of popular music during the 1980s, apartheid South Africa’s foreign relations with African states, and rights-based restitution and land reform. The programme records the Vice-Chancellor’s research and teaching awards, including medals awarded to Professors Tebello Nyokong, Anthony John Booth, Geoffrey Gordon Antrobus and Roderick Charles Fox. It also lists academic honours, colours, scholarships, bursaries and subject-specific prizes. As a primary institutional record, the programme supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing postgraduate scholarship, and documenting Rhodes University’s academic and institutional history in 2004.
