Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 12 April 2003, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The seventeen-page programme documents undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, academic distinctions, university awards, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. Chancellor G.J. Gerwel and Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods are identified among the university’s leadership. Michael Hartnack addressed the congregation and received an honorary Doctor of Literature degree, honoris causa, while Sipho Arthur Mono Badela was posthumously awarded the same degree, accepted on his behalf by Mrs V. Badela. The programme lists Humanities graduates across disciplines including English, History, Drama, Psychology, Philosophy, Journalism and Media Studies, Politics, Anthropology, Geography, Musicology and Linguistics. Postgraduate research addresses digital photojournalism, media and parliamentary politics, HIV/AIDS, ecofeminism, marine fish systematics, traditional leadership, regional development, financial markets, refugee protection and rural governance. Doctoral research includes studies of Pentecostalism, linguistic theory, sustainable riverine management in the Eastern Cape, childhood disease perceptions in Malawi, political dominance in Kenya and South Africa, and rural local government. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s research and teaching awards, alongside extensive lists of academic honours, colours and scholarships, including Andrew Mellon Foundation, Henderson and Rhodes University postgraduate scholarships. As a primary institutional record, it preserves evidence of Rhodes University’s academic achievements, research priorities and ceremonial traditions in 2003. It supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing scholarly careers, and documenting the history of higher education and research in South Africa.
